The Donatuskerk in Leermens (municipality Eemsdelta) is one of the oldest and most culturally and historically valuable churches in the North of the Netherlands. The church stands prominently on top of one of the highest radial wierden (an artificial hill) in the province of Groningen, making the building a real eye-catcher in the Groningen landscape.

The church tower was only built in 1710. Because the mound around the building was later partly excavated, the tower has become significantly out of plumb. Large wooden beams connected to the church ensure that the tower remains stable today.

Beautiful medieval cruciform church with a freestanding bell tower. Open during the day. Toilets, coffee, and a friendly host are available in the village hall across the street.

The keep of Ewsum The round gun tower of Ewsum Castle near Middelstum was built in 1472 by knight Onno van Ewsum. With its thick walls and loopholes, it offered protection during a time of war and the rise of firearms. This is the most important remaining example of the once impressive castle; the rest was demolished in the 19th century. Today, the tower is part of the historic castle grounds, along with gardens and heritage belonging to Het Groninger Landschap (The Groningen Landscape).
