November 21, 2025, Van Goghkerkje (Waterstaatskerk) Nuenen

The Van Gogh Church is one of the most famous places in Nuenen, especially because Vincent van Gogh painted it several times during his time in the village. The building itself is simple and charming: a small Protestant church from the 19th century, surrounded by old trees and a quiet square. You're truly standing on historic grounds here—Van Gogh walked past it almost daily on his way to the places where he made his studies. A beautiful, atmospheric stop during a walk through the Nuenen countryside.

This house is the vicarage where Van Gogh's parents lived in Nuenen, in the Dutch province of North Brabant. He painted it after returning home to stay with them for a while. The vicarage is still standing. The atmosphere in the Van Gogh home was often strained; Vincent was quick to take offence at his father's remarks. He had the feeling his family consisted mainly of 'people who keep up a position', he wrote. He didn't fit in, as 'a peasant painter – who doesn't think about it'.

Vincent van Gogh's father was a minister in this church in Nuenen. This Dutch Reformed Church was built between 1824 and 1826. It still has a copper baptismal font from Vincent's time. Vincent painted this church for his mother on February 3, 1884. Later, after his father's death in March 1885, he painted over the work and added mourning figures. The painting was stolen from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 2002. In the autumn of 2016, it was recovered from a mafia house near Naples, Italy. After restoration, it can now be admired again in the museum in Amsterdam. The church is generally closed to the public, but can occasionally be visited. From April to October: Every second Wednesday and last Sunday of the month. On those days, the church is open from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

The museum focuses on the time Van Gogh spent in Nuenen. Please don't expect to see an original painting by Van Gogh in this museum.

Still a real, old piece of Nuenen. The Clemenskerk that still stands there stately and behind it the old cemetery. And here you can clearly see that the church used to attract many nuns because on the other side about 250 meters walk there is still a part of the monastery. These sisters meant a lot to Nuenen, not only care for the sick but also nursery school and primary school were led by the nuns in the past.

The Van Gogh Church from 1824 is a neoclassical hall church, which was made famous by preachers such as Theo van Gogh and of course by the painter Vincent van Gogh. Due to the growing congregations, the Van Gogh Church became too small and is now used for special ceremonies and cultural events.
