Fact; During the 80-year war in 1597, Maurits also came to this part of the Netherlands with a large army of 9,000 soldiers, 1,600 horses and cannons to drive out the Spanish from their fortresses such as Enschede, Oldenzaal and Ootmarsum. Maurits also passed Beuningen, where he crossed the Dinkel. The bridge over it had to be reinforced to allow this army to cross. He succeeded in driving out the Spanish from the fortresses mentioned (with around four hundred Spanish occupiers in Oldenzaal, for example). Now that the series The Story of the Netherlands-Orange Nassau with a special episode about Prince Maurits is so successful, this ‘Story of Beuningen’ has been added. So that is about that Maurits of Orange from the 16th century and it is not the son of Princess Margriet and Pieter van Vollenhove after whom the bridge is named...
