The Mehrum hard coal power plant was shut down on December 8th, 2021 and was only kept as a network reserve. With the start of the Ukraine War, regular operations resumed. The reason for this was the empty gas storage facilities, which had to be filled quickly for the winter of 2022/2023, meaning that the gas power plants in Germany temporarily produced very little electricity.
