Hawse Clough is a small, historic drainage channel on the north bank of the River Ouse near Hemingbrough, forming part of the low‑lying floodplain system that has shaped the village’s landscape for centuries. A “clough” in Yorkshire usage often refers to a drainage ditch or small watercourse, especially in reclaimed or low‑lying riverine landscapes.

Out of nearly 170 routes in the area, the vast majority are classified as easy, with a few moderate options for those seeking a slightly longer walk.
Yes, the flat terrain makes Long Drax ideal for family outings. A great option is the Newhay Lakes loop from Hemingbrough, which is a short and easy walk. For a day out with more to explore, the Drax Skylark Centre offers accessible nature trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.
The open countryside and riverside paths are generally well-suited for walking with dogs. Many local parks, such as Barlow Common Nature Reserve, are popular spots for dog walkers. However, always be mindful of livestock in fields and wildlife in nature reserves, and keep your dog on a lead where required.
Yes, many of the best walks in the area are circular routes, allowing you to start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. A good example of a moderate loop is the Barmby Barrage – Cows in the Countryside loop from Barmby on the Marsh, which combines riverside and farmland scenery.
The area is highly regarded by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the peaceful, flat landscape which makes for relaxing walks. The tranquil paths along the River Ouse and the opportunities for birdwatching in the local wetlands are frequently mentioned as highlights.
While the area is mostly flat, the most scenic views are found along the banks of the River Ouse, offering wide perspectives of the water and surrounding farmland. For a different kind of scenery, Hambleton Hough is a nearby hill that provides a lovely vantage point to walk around and look out over the landscape.
Absolutely. The region is close to several excellent nature reserves. The Wetland Area – Birdwatching by the River loop from Barmby on the Marsh takes you through a local wildlife habitat. For a more extensive experience, a short drive will take you to Skipwith Common National Nature Reserve, a large area of heathland and woodland with its own waymarked trails.
Most trails are well-defined paths through farmland or along riverbanks. Because the terrain is low-lying and near a river, some paths can become muddy, especially after rain. It's always a good idea to wear waterproof footwear.
