The historical landmark commemorates the significant Hessian chief building director Claus Kröncke (1771–1843), who was largely responsible for the regulation of the Rhine and, together with Johann Gottfried Tulla, planned and implemented, among other things, the visionary "Rheindurchstich" (Rhine cut-through) near Stockstadt. This massive structural intervention significantly reduced regional flood risks and, at the same time, shaped the present-day, extensive nature reserve Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue. According to the engraved inscription, the community of Groß-Rohrheim thanked Kröncke above all for his political and economic commitment, more specifically for obtaining tax exemptions as well as regulations on the indivisibility of property and the abolition of tithes and sheep grazing rights. Today, the historical stone obelisk with its striking, austere ornamentation is a popular stop for cyclists and hikers, for example, along the newly inaugurated Claus-Kröncke circular hiking trail.
