The historic town fountain The town fountain is one of the landmarks of Stein am Rhein. The elegant fountain in the middle of the Rathausplatz dates back to 1601. It was carved from limestone by master stonemason Hans Baur and commissioned by Mayor Johann Jakob Meyer as part of the town's beautification. The fountain features a statue of Saint George on horseback slaying a dragon – an image that holds great symbolic value for the Swiss town. Saint George is considered the patron saint against various diseases, including the plague that ravaged Europe at the time. Around the base are four reliefs depicting scenes from local history: the granting of market rights by Emperor Henry II in 1017, the homage to King Rudolf I of Habsburg after his coronation, the donation of land by Count Diethelm von Krenkingen to the Reichenau Abbey, and the granting of the charter of freedom to Stein am Rhein by Abbot Wolleb. Schiffländi Redesign The Schiffländi in Stein am Rhein is being renovated and beautified. The city council has drawn up a preliminary project for the planned redesign, which served as the basis for the construction loan application of 5.82 million francs. This application was approved by the local council on April 12, 2024, and by the voters on June 9, 2024. The preliminary project now available was preceded by a three-year planning process involving the public. It takes into account the needs of various stakeholders and combines different concerns in the best possible way. The redesign is intended to significantly increase the quality of stay on the Schiffländi site. Core elements include the modern spatial design with different floor coverings and many trees, a safety-conscious traffic regime that makes the Schiffländi a largely traffic-free zone, a large pavilion, various benches, outdoor dining that is partially moved to the center of the square, direct access to the Rhine via a wide staircase, a fountain for cooling off on hot summer days, and last but not least, the general and natural cooling of the square through the planned shade-providing planting. The redesign of the Schiffländi is a gift from the Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation as part of its 30th anniversary. The present redesign for just under 5.8 million francs is one of the planned beautification projects. Although the investment is a gift and does not incur any costs for the city, the project can only be implemented with the approval of the local council and the voters, which is now available. The city council is convinced of the quality of the project and the new ambience that will be created at the Schiffländi. The redesign makes the Schiffländi more beautiful, user-friendly and safer. After the voters approved the ballot on June 9, 2024, the construction project and the building permit process will be started in the 2nd semester of 2024. The contractor tenders will then follow in the 1st semester of 2025, so that construction work can begin in autumn 2025. The opening of the redesigned Schiffländi is planned for spring 2026.
