A breeding program in the 1950s saved the species from extinction. With 12 Przewalskí horses that had survived in zoos and menageries, a breeding program was initiated from the late 1950s, focusing on stabilizing these remaining animals and building a healthy population to ensure the species' survival. The coordination of breeding was improved by the establishment of a studbook in 1959. It is managed by the Prague Zoo, while the EEP studbook is overseen by the Cologne Zoo. There were once 5 young stallions here, near the Königsbrunner Heide, currently (2025) there are only three. One had to be euthanized because it was severely injured by a rival. Another was transferred to a different herd as part of the breeding program.
