On the edge of the so-called Salzforst (Salt Forest) near Bad Neustadt lies a Marian pilgrimage site worth a visit, especially for its tranquil location off the beaten track: Unterebersbach, romantically nestled on the upper reaches of the Saale River, attracts visitors with its unassuming yet beautiful pilgrimage and parish church of the Annunciation of Mary. According to legend, the small church was built in thanksgiving for the miraculous rescue of a hunter who had become hopelessly lost in the Salzforst (Salt Forest). Furthermore, the cozy church is also popularly known as the Church of the Snows. Since 1723, a copy of the highly venerated image of the "Salus Populi Romani" from the Roman church of Santa Maria Maggiore has hung here, commemorating the legendary Miracle of the Snows. Despite all the beauty of the place, Unterebersbach never had a great pilgrimage tradition; the importance of the church, first mentioned in 1453 and enlarged in 1588 by Julius Echter, was rather limited to the immediate surroundings. Only August 5th has remained an important festival day in the Unterebersbach calendar over the centuries: then the locals celebrate the Maria Schnee festival and countless former pilgrims flock to the small Rhön community.
