March 16, 2023, Klosterbrauerei Furth & Schaubrennerei

In Furth is the Holledauer Gate, through which you enter the largest hop-growing region in the world, the Hallertau. In Furth Monastery with its adjacent show brewery and a barrier-free show herb garden, time travelers on the Time Trails path of drinking history not only learn interesting facts about the production of beer and herbal distillates, but can also fortify themselves between copper kettles. In 1621, the lord of Furth received the brewing rights confirmed in a "confirmation letter" in black and white with a signature from Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria. This point in time is considered to be the origin of the brewing history in Furth Castle. From 1879, Matthäus Freiherr von Hornstein ran the brewery and modernized it with a new steam engine. The golden barley juice was brewed under high pressure. In 1921, the Marist Brothers took over the castle brewery from Baroness Freifrau Philomena von Hornstein as tenants. It was renamed the Furth Monastery Brewery in 1980. "The beer mug in your hand connects town and country!" said Brother Burkhard in 1998. In this sense, you can cycle from Furth to the "Three-Helmet City" of Landshut. The brothers in Furth produce not only beer, but also herbal distillates. The recipes have remained unchanged since 1857. They use over 30 different herbs, roots and spices. Visitors can discover some examples of the herbs used in the barrier-free display herb garden. The old and secret monastery recipe is closely guarded by the monks of the order.

Great tour, especially with the Cross E Bike over the mountain and forest paths between Furth and Eugenbach. This part is only recommended for stable touring bikes with cross tires.

My home route along hiking trail 1, which I ride 1-2 times a week. Small strong ascents and descents with a lot of variety and one or the other easy challenge. Well suited for MTB beginners and advanced. Special skills are not required. The paths are easily passable on foot, by bike and MTB.

On the site of the former monastery garden there is now a small pub with a beer garden. It's worth taking a break on a hoibe here.
