The pilgrimage site is idyllically situated. It can also be accessed via the cloister, built in 2001. The name Maria Zell derives from the Zell settlement, which was abandoned in the 15th century. A small cemetery is attached.

Absolutely. The majestic Hohenzollern Castle is a central feature and focal point for many hikes, offering breathtaking views. The path to the castle itself winds through woodlands and past historic buildings, enhancing the overall experience.
The region's diverse landscape, with its high plateaus and ridge edges, is generally best enjoyed during spring, summer, and autumn when conditions are most stable. While winter mountaineering is possible, the challenging terrain and potential for snow and ice on the Albtrauf require appropriate gear and experience.
While specific restrictions can vary, many trails in the Swabian Alb are generally dog-friendly. However, given the challenging terrain, steep drops, and potential for exposed sections on some mountaineering routes, it's advisable to keep dogs on a leash and ensure they are accustomed to such conditions. Always check local signage for any specific rules.
Beyond the stunning viewpoints, the region offers other natural wonders. The Nebelhöhle cave, an impressive dripstone cave, can be explored via a circular route, allowing visitors to marvel at its unique formations. Additionally, the trails along the River Eyach provide a different, often less strenuous, scenic experience.
Given the challenging nature of some routes and the varied terrain, it's recommended to pack sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are key), sufficient water and snacks, a map or GPS device, and sun protection. For more difficult or exposed sections, trekking poles can be beneficial.
