KulturØen (The Culture Island) is a modern, architecturally interesting building, a feast for the eyes right on Middelfart's new harborfront. The Culture Island was designed by the renowned architectural firm Arkitekten Schmidt Hammer Lassen. Architect John Lassen and designer Lars Vejen were primarily responsible for the work. The building was constructed on an artificial island in the new harbor, the privately owned marina. The cladding is made of pre-patinated zinc. KulturØen opened in August 2005. The Little Belt Shipyard now operates as a museum shipyard and maritime history center for the northern part of the Little Belt, where the tradition of wooden shipbuilding is still preserved and passed on. Since 1855, dinghies and boats have been built at the small shipyard. "Little Belt dinghies" were built here for porpoising, fishing, and pilotage. The preferred construction technique was clinker construction. Clinker boats are a special type of boat with a hull construction in which the hull planks overlap. The tradition of clinker construction dates back more than a thousand years and is an important part of coastal culture and cultural heritage in Scandinavia.
