The Mittersill train station is located on the Pinzgau Railway, which is also called the Pinzgau or Krimml Railway. The narrow-gauge railway with a track gauge of 760 mm is a former ÖBB line that was taken over by the state of Salzburg in 2008. It runs 53 kilometers through the Salzach valley and connects Zell am See with Krimml. The section between Mittersill and Wald was so badly damaged in 2005 that operations were suspended. The line was rebuilt in two stages and could be reopened on September 11, 2010.
