Old Winchester Hill

Highlight • Climb

The route for bikes skirts the bottom of the fort instead of heading straight over it, so you're in for a steep climb, but if you've got the time it's well worth poking your nose around. Little remains of the fort itself except for the substantial earthern ramparts – but even if you decide to press on, the views are fantastic.

Old Winchester Hill Iron Age Fort

Highlight • Historical Site

This Iron Age hill fort is set amid one of the most beautiful landscapes of the South Downs. The fort itself is encompassed by a bank and ditch and inside the fort, dips left from flint excavations and the rounded mounds of Bronze Age tumuli can be seen. Platforms on which huts and animal enclosures are still evident, too. It is a wonderful place to explore and affords incredible views over the surrounding countryside.

Hayling Billy Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

Start this trail from East Street in Havant to miss the traffic crossing the M27. The trail keeps you away from all the busy roads and traffic. It's really well kept and easy to ride with lots of scenic spots especially when the tide is in.

When you get to the end of the trail at the old Hayling Station, either cycle straight ahead to the sea front or turn right to cycle along to the ferry port. From there, (furthest east point opposite Langstone harbour) you can cycle on well marked trails all the way to the east point of the island.

This was on the last leg of the King Alfred’s Way for me and was one of the few descents in the whole trip i walked, dry conditions but on a loaded gravel - the descent was more treacherous than i was prepared to risk / but amazing views from the top and a fast through the fields ride from the bottom.

This is a beautiful Iron Age hill fort that is now a national nature reserve, and it is a great area to bring the family to enjoy the beautiful views from the top. It has come a long way from being a mortar testing range for the British Army back in WW2.

Hayling Island Billy Trail is a cycling and walking trail that runs along the old railway line between Havant and Hayling Island, in Hampshire, England. The trail is a permissive route used by walkers, cyclists and equestrians. The path is about 8 km long and offers beautiful views of the coast and nature. The trail follows the route of the Hayling Billy Train, which carried passengers and goods between Havant and Hayling Island from 1867 to 1963. The train got its nickname from the noise it made when traveling over the wooden bridge over Langstone Harbour. The train was discontinued due to declining demand and the bridge's high cost of maintenance. The path starts at Havant station and follows a clearly marked cycle path to New Lane. From there the path follows the old railway line, passing under the A27, onto the A302 road to Hayling Island at Langstone. The trail crosses the road and continues along the west coast of Hayling Island, passing fields, woods and marshes. The trail ends at Hayling Island station, which is now a theatre.

Worth the slippery, chalky muddy ascent from Mile End lane - looking forward to repeating the route in summer with less mud!

One of my favourite places, full of magic. It can be pretty windy but that usually makes for interesting fast moving clouds. Make sure to bring a coat and a picnic!
