All Saints Church, Dulverton

Highlight • Historical Site

Although there is record of a church existing on this site in 1155, the building before you dates back to the 15th century, and a significant portion of it was restored in the mid-19th century. It is listed as a Grade II building."

Bridge Cottage Tea Room

Highlight • Cafe

We once had a wonderfully delicious cream tea with all the trimmings in the beautiful garden, right next to the ford. Over the years we have tried again and again to repeat the experience... Unfortunately, always in vain, because the great tea room is only open very irregularly. But it's definitely worth a try if you're in Winsford!
P. S. We were there again and were once again thrilled by this lovely place. Unfortunately the garden will close forever at the end of October 23, and the tea room (inside) will close on December 18th. The owners are retiring. Shame, shame, shame, it was one of the most delightful places for cream tea on Exmoor.

St Mary Magdalene Church, Exmoor

Highlight • Historical Site

13th century Norman church. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, rather simple and bright on the inside and with an ancient cemetery around it. We liked it!

Hawkridge Ridge

Highlight • Natural

While odd to say out loud, this ridgeline offers tremendous views of the surrounding fields and valleys. It's climbing up from the Barle and this top stretch is part of the Exe Valley Way.

At the western end of the ridge is Hawkridge itself, a lovely old village with excellent views.

October 7, 2025, St Mary Magdalene Church, Exmoor

After the Mother of God, "MARY MAGDALENE" is the most frequently mentioned woman in the writings of the New Testament. Originally called "Mary of Magdala"—after her place of origin on the Sea of Galilee—the name "Mary Magdalene" has evolved over time. According to the testimony of the evangelists, she is one of the women and men who followed Jesus Christ. According to the biblical accounts, Mary Magdalene is also one of the three who, after the crucifixion and burial of Jesus on Easter morning, wished to anoint the body of Jesus, and the very first person to ever meet the resurrected Christ. Pope Francis therefore honored her as an 'Apostle of the Apostles,' saying at a general audience: + "She shows us the God who knows us human beings, cares for us, and cares for our lives. Every person is a story of love that God is writing on earth. As with Mary Magdalene, the life of every Christian is immersed in this overflowing joy: We have a God at our side who calls us by name and raises us up, who, through his resurrection, transforms us and the world." The feast day of Saint Mary Magdalene in the calendar of saints is, in all major Christian denominations, July 22nd.

A song that—originally from the American gospel tradition—has traveled the world, fitting perfectly for this church, which the parish has entrusted to the patron saint of "All Saints." "Oh when the Saints go marching in, oh when the Saints go marching in, oh Lord, I want to be in that number, oh when the Saints go marching in." Over the decades, new versions of the lyrics have repeatedly emerged; the original text cannot be verified due to the early oral tradition. Many artists have taken up the gospel song and released their own interpretations, such as Bruce Springsteen with his session band at a concert in Dublin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6eKkirEcgE
