Nathalie
February 12, 2026, Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara is one of the oldest and most impressive Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. The pristine white stupa towers high above the palm trees and is visible from afar. Especially at sunrise or just before sunset, an almost magical tranquility hangs over the grounds. The temple dates back over 2,000 years and is still actively used. You'll see monks, local families making offerings, and pilgrims walking silently around the stupa. Respectful dress is important here: shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed.

Today’s ride was a challenging climb up Mount Knuckles. The first 60 km offered smooth, flat roads along picturesque lakes and rivers — a truly scenic start. The initial section of the climb transitioned to gravel, followed by a rough bitumen surface. The ascent included some extremely steep gradients where walking was necessary. Despite the difficulty, the breathtaking views made it all worthwhile!

An incredible structure - these three Buddhas carved out of the rock: sitting, standing, lying (dying). In between there is another sitting Buddha. Very symbolic. Highly impressive

There is a beautiful Buddha statue next to a stupa and towards the entrance of the museum. 30 meters high, built from 1998-2001. There is also a monastery and a school for young monks on the site. Here you can also watch monkeys doing gymnastics on the Buddha. This part of the site can be visited without admission. Entrance to the temple is chargeable. The complex is located just 2 kilometers from the center of Dumballa.

In Sri Lanka, there are many inland freshwater reservoirs, which they call 'tanks'. This road is a particularly scenic one, taking you right alongside Kandamala Tank, where you can see lots of bird life from herons and egrets to pelicans! Savour the views on this smooth tarmac.
