Melk Abbey is one of Europe's most magnificent Baroque ensembles, enthroned like a golden fortress on a rock overlooking the Danube. It is the undisputed landmark of the Wachau (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. The abbey owes its present appearance to the Baroque master builder Jakob Prandtauer. Between 1702 and 1736, the medieval castle of the Babenbergs was transformed into this huge Baroque building. The typical "Melk Yellow" (Schönbrunn Yellow) shines particularly intensely when the sun shines on the west facade and the striking twin towers of the abbey church.
