Gifted to the city from Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster. He gave the land and paid for the design. Laid out 1865-66, opened November 1867. Grade II* listed, one of the finest Victorian parks left in UK. Formal avenues, sweeping lawns, ornamental beds - classic Victorian mix of formal and picturesque. Entrance lodge by John Douglas, famous Chester architect. Statues, a miniature railway in summer, cafe in the lodge. Had a £3.6m restoration, reopened 2014 by 6th Duke of Westminster.

Quarter-mile dead end that used to be Chester's super-highway. Drops from the main line at Chester Basin down 3 locks plus the old river lock to the tidal Dee. Built 1779 to link Chester to the Midlands, collapsed at Beeston, saved by Ellesmere Port, died when Shotton steel stopped. Now it's padlocked, overgrown and perfect. If your boat gets past Lock 2, you get the Silver Propeller bragging rights. If you're walking, it's the quiet cut where the canal goes rogue and tries to join the river.

Morgan's Mount is a tower on the north side of Chester's city walls that served as a lookout platform during the English Civil War. It is the first tower along the walls west of the North Gate. It takes its name from a gun battery located outside the present walls, commanded by Captain Edward Morgan during the Civil War. Source: http://www.discoverchester.co.uk/

There are many choices to be made here . It's a pleasant spot to drop onto the Shropshire Union Canal Towpath to go to either Chester or Ellesmere Port Basin & the National Waterways Museum. Or continue up the hill to Chester Zoo . In the opposite direction is either Chorlton up the badly resurfaced Chorlton Lane on the left (from the bridge) or straight on (again in the opposite direction to the Zoo) to Crowton & Stoak. Stoak has the Bunbury Arms at its heart, well worth stopping for a bite to eat😋👍

A great place for a peaceful ride. It’s mostly paved, but there is a section of gravel, that could be managed with a road bike.

It can get a little busy and is narrow in places. Just take it easy and be respectful.
