Tips from the Community

Strawanzer
September 25, 2025, Gmünd - Sgraffitohäuser (1560 bis 1580)

Like other towns in northern Lower Austria, Gmünd also boasts impressive examples of sgraffito art from the Reformation period. Two gabled houses north of the town hall, originally late Gothic, are particularly noteworthy. One of the houses features depictions from ancient legends on a Renaissance-era facade (around 1570/80). The myths that Ovid treats in his Metamorphoses ("Transformations") served as the model for the depiction. The facade of the neighboring house (around 1565) is somewhat simpler in its decoration, featuring small-scale diamond-shaped decoration, a herringbone pattern, and a frieze of figures. The latter decoration is unique in Austria.

Unfortunately, swimming in the Aßangteich is now prohibited - unless you are a guest in the Sole-Felsen-Bad.

This granite rock in the Blockheide is called the Devil's Loaf of Bread. Apparently the devil once offered the residents of Grillenstein the chance to make bread out of stones.

One of many granite blocks in the Blockheide that have been given a name. The devil himself is said to have used this one as a bed. After he couldn't sleep well there, his sleeping place turned to stone...

The Asangteich is a natural bathing lake with very good water quality. The Sole Felsen Welt of Bad Gmünd is located directly on the shore.
