Late classical parish church, built in 1790-1794 to the design of architect Colin, replacing a Romanesque church with an octagonal tower on the same site. Non-oriented church, whose portal lies in the axis of the opposite Kasteeldreef and castle. Surrounded on three sides by the churchyard, with a view of the Mandel valley at the rear. Located on the southeastern corner of the triangular village square, on the main road towards Tielt on one side and towards Deinze on the other. A first mention of the parish "Wacken", dating from 791, can be found in the Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent. Around 850, mention is made of the donation, among other things, of a church, located in Wakken, to the Saint Peter's Abbey, by a certain Gontbertus and his wife Thiadwara. At the origin of the parish, Wakken belonged to the diocese of Noyon-Doornik, after the division of the diocese in 1146, Wakken came under the administration of Tournai. Through a further subdivision of the diocese, in the early 13th century, Wakken fell under the jurisdiction of the deanery of Roeselare, belonging to the archdeaconry of Ghent. From 1559, this became the diocese of Ghent, deanery of Tielt, and from 1803, the diocese of Bruges. (Inventaris Onroerend Erfgoed)
