The Saint Paul's Church in Langemark, also known as the Saint Paul's Bekering Church, is a neo-Gothic hall church built between 1923 and 1925. The church, designed by architect Thierry Nolf, has an imposing western tower and stands on the market square, surrounded by lime trees. The original church was completely destroyed during the First World War, and the current structure was rebuilt afterwards. Inside the church you will find stained glass windows and a contemporary work of art, "Way of the Cross of Love", by the Brussels painter Luc Hoenraet.

Poelkapelle is a village in the Belgian province of West Flanders. Around the peaceful village you will find some simple war monuments that remind you of the sacrifices made during the First World War, in which Poelkapelle was completely destroyed. As part of the reconstruction, a market square was also constructed: Guynemerplein, named after the famous French fighter pilot George Guynemer, who crashed and died there during an air battle. The Guynemer memorial for this can be found in the center next to the Church of Our Lady.

Georges GUYNEMER (°Paris 24/12/1894 – +Poelkapelle 11/9/1917) From an early age, Guynemer had a great interest in technology and aviation in particular. At the outbreak of war he volunteered, but was refused twice due to his poor health. He was finally accepted as an apprentice mechanic at the end of November 1914. Due to his drive, he quickly rose to become a fighter pilot in the escadrille n° 3, later known as "Escadrille des Cigognes", where he flew, among other things, the escadrille Morane-Saulnier and Nieuport aircraft types. He achieved 53 recognized and more than 30 probable victories. He himself was knocked down 7 times and hurt twice. As the highest scoring air ace at the time, he died in mysterious circumstances.

Striking monument, consisting of six bundled columns, with a bronze stork with hanging wings on top. This refers to the Escadrille des Cigognes (stork squadron) of which the French pilot Georges Guynemer was a member. That pilot, who was included in the "Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur" at the age of 21 because of his victories in air combat, was shot down in 1917, although - contrary to what the text on the monument says - not in this place (but in an unknown place). The column contains the text: "This memorial column was erected in honor of the French airman Guynemer who fell here on September 11, 1917." There is also a bronze medallion with the image of Guynemer and there are French-language texts. The monument was designed by Jean Hendrickx and installed in 1923. Source: Wikipedia
