An 🇧🇪
May 3, 2026, Wooden Bridge Over the Mombeek

The Mombeek flows via Zammelen, Wintershoven, Vliermaalroot and Wimmertingen to Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, where it flows into the Herk after approximately 23 km. The Mombeek fed numerous watermills, such as the Croesmolen in Vliermaal, the Wintershovenmolen near the Desseneer farm in Wintershoven, the Rootmolen in Vliermaalroot, the Bombroekmolen (no longer on the Mombeek due to the relocation of the riverbed) in Kortessem, the Luimertingenmolen in Kortessem and the mill near the castle of Mombeek between Rapertingen and Wimmertingen. In total, there were 12 watermills on the Mombeek. The name of the stream is therefore a contraction of Molenbeek. @https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mombeek

Let yourself be touched by the inspiring sculpture, the understated poetry, and the subtle symbolism, which blend beautifully with the tranquility of nature. A place to pause, feel, and come to yourself. You are most welcome.

Around the Sint-Martinus church lies a spacious, walled churchyard that immediately exudes a calm and charming atmosphere. A few striking lime trees provide shade and character, while old grave crosses whisper silent stories from the past. Through the main entrance, beautifully marked by two sturdy limestone pillars, you step into this special piece of heritage. The church itself is a fascinating mix of styles and periods: a 14th or 15th-century Gothic tower, an 18th-century nave, and a transept with a choir from the early 20th century, designed by Mathieu Christiaens. Together, they form a harmonious whole that has effortlessly stood the test of time.

This castle, also known as 't Rood Kasteel (Red Castle), was the former residence of the Lords of Guigoven and is one of the few buildings built on the marshy soil of the Mombeek alluvial plain. Early sources mention it as early as the 13th century. The oldest parts of the complex (the house to the left of the gatehouse: 1619) date from the first half of the 17th century and were built in the Maasland Renaissance style. The 18th- and 19th-century renovations were generally carried out in the Classical and Neoclassical styles. Originally, it was a moated castle with a drawbridge as the only access. The current pond is a remnant of the former moat.

The Kuringen Bridge is a new arched bridge over the Albert Canal in Belgium, replacing two old railway bridges to increase the clearance for shipping. Built between 2019 and 2021, it now allows for a higher clearance of 9.10 meters and widens the canal to 86 meters. In addition to the new railway bridge, a wide bicycle connection was also created.
