Getting there is no joke. I have seen people go there with beach sandals. Absurd! To get there, to the hermitage, you pass the gole dell’infernaccio, where the name already gives you an idea, even if it is beautiful and in one of the brightest points of the path you can also see the statue of a Madonna embedded in the rock. So the walking shoes first of all!

Beautiful place, you can walk in the gorge and the next day go up from the Sibilla refuge to see the gorge from above. Unfortunately when we went there was too much water and we couldn't get over the river (it would have taken more determination than ours) so we did a very short tour that is not a loop.

Paradise Gorge would be a more appropriate name 🙂. In a torrid summer the perfect place! To see and see again. You can continue with various paths.

Beyond the well-known Monte Vettore and Infernaccio Gorge, the region offers diverse natural beauty within the Monti Sibillini National Park. You can discover the sources of the Nera River, including the 'Sorgenti dell'acqua della salute', or visit the picturesque Cascate del Pisciatore, a waterfall nestled in a dense forest. The area is rich with trails and forests, perfect for nature lovers.
Yes, for an easier experience, consider the Sentiero Natura N.11, a short, easy loop trail from Nocelleto in the Valle di Corveto, offering panoramic views of the Monti Sibillini. Additionally, the Forca di Presta Pass features an accessible path to the Belvedere refuge, suitable for various mobility levels.
For more challenging hikes, the Forca di Presta Pass serves as a starting point for numerous trails, including difficult ascents towards Monte Vettore, the highest peak in the Sibillini range. These trails offer rewarding views but require good physical condition.
Castelsantangelo sul Nera retains its medieval urban plan with fortified walls and access gates. You can explore several historic churches, such as the Chiesa di Santa Margherita with its 14th-century frescoes, or the Romanesque Chiesa di San Martino. The Monastero di San Liberatore, built on 13th-century castle ruins, also offers a glimpse into the region's past.
Yes, the village is home to the Museo della Nostra Terra (Museum of Our Land), located in the 15th-century convent of Saint Augustine. This museum showcases around 5000 objects and tools related to agricultural life in the Macerata hills, along with photographic documentation of peasant crafts. There's also the Museo dell'Acqua (Water Museum), a distributed experience exploring the connection between the Nera River and the local population.
Absolutely! The area is excellent for outdoor activities. For cycling, you can find routes like the 'Piani di Castelluccio – loop tour' or the 'Piano Grande of Castelluccio – Forca di Presta Pass loop'. The summit of Monte Vettore offers breathtaking panoramic views, extending to the sea and the Gran Sasso mountains on clear days. Another excellent spot is the Forca di Presta Pass, which provides expansive vistas of the Castelluccio plain and the surrounding Sibillini peaks.
The best times for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring natural sites such as the Infernaccio Gorge are generally spring and summer. During these seasons, the weather is more favorable for trekking, and the landscapes are vibrant. However, autumn also offers beautiful scenery with changing foliage.
While Castelsantangelo sul Nera itself offers local amenities, for those exploring the higher altitudes, the Rifugio del Fargno provides refuge, meals, and a place to rest at 1820 meters. Throughout the region, you can find local restaurants to enjoy traditional products like truffles, honey, and cheeses.
The Nera River originates directly in the territory of Castelsantangelo sul Nera, flowing from Monte Prata. Its sources, particularly the 'Sorgenti dell'acqua della salute', are a point of interest.
