Norman Castle

Highlight • Castle

At the beginning it is a steep uphill. With the Calabrian sun exhausting there is no shade. But wonderful short tour.

Riace, Town of Hospitality

Highlight • Settlement

Constant but not very steep ascent, apart from the final stretch, which leads into the town center made famous by the many hospitality projects, promoted by the former mayor Mimmo Lucano. From here we continue to other characteristic inland towns

Monasterace

Highlight • Settlement

Monasterace (RC)
A small medieval village in a panoramic position on the southern Ionian coast, Monasterace is divided into two villages: Superiore and Marina.
History
Its name comes from the Byzantine Monasteraki and refers to the monastery near Monasterace Marina, close to the remains of Kaulonia.
The village certainly suffered Saracen raids (9th century), which forced the inhabitants to flee to safer places, and thus Monasterace Superiore was founded. The need for defense is attested by the castle as early as 1038.
At the beginning of the 11th century, under the Normans, Monasterace was handed over to the Order of Malta and then to various feudal lords.
With the Anjous, the town passed from Queen Joanna I to Prince Errico Caracciolo, in gratitude for his help in the war against Louis, King of Hungary, brother of the queen's husband, who died mysteriously.
From the Caracciolos, the town passed to the Arenas and then to the Galeotas, who were expelled by the Aragonese (15th century). Monasterace then passed to the Monacus, who ruled here until 1621.
An earthquake severely damaged the town in 1659.
In the 18th century, Monasterace belonged successively to the Abenantes, the Perrellis, the Tomacellis, the Martuccis, Baron Oliva, and Baron Scoppa.

Very nice view, worth it! Unfortunately, the hiking trail has been completely neglected. Fences and even lighting were once put up - but everything is broken and demolished, the path is often overgrown and not marked. The ruins at the top are now in a much better condition than the hiking trail there. It's a shame, a lot of potential is being wasted here.

From the castle you have a beautiful view, both towards Stilo and towards Bivongi. The ascent to the castle is quite sweaty in warm weather 😅.

Nice castle recently restored and beautiful views over the whole area. By bike you arrive just below, the last 300-400m (50 / 100m d +) to be done on foot
