The path is in a disastrous state (fallen trees, thorny bushes, almost completely overgrown). In winter and after rain, it's nearly impossible to reach the bottom of the gorge.

It's completely unclear which point on the river is being referred to here, and what condition the river is in. Consequently, the (repetitive) tips are of little use. In winter, after rain, while descending the path on the western side, which was in a disastrous state (!), I encountered a raging torrent below, making it nearly impossible to reach the entrance of the gorge!

Beautiful, but depending on the time of day, it can get very crowded. It's best to come in the morning. The cool water of the Alcantara is a relief on hot days 😃

One of the most beautiful lava tunnels on the north side of Mount Etna is the Serracozzo Grotto (surely often visited, but not signposted). A lava tunnel is not a cave, but rather one formed during an eruption, when a crust forms on the surface of the slowly flowing lava in flatter terrain. This "tunnel" is easy to enter (assuming there's no threat of a thunderstorm (flooding!) or ice and snow making entry dangerous). Don't forget your flashlight; two cave-ins in the ceiling provide sufficient light until halfway through the tunnel, after which it becomes very shallow and pitch-dark in places. It's worth exploring!

"Hike" is definitely an exaggeration. It is a walking path and at the same time worth seeing. Look for the Communal Entrance if you do not want to take guided tours etc. When buying the entrance ticket, make sure that you buy at least the orange route (6€). The €2 entrance ticket only allows you to access the beach via the stairs. If you are too lazy to walk or have difficulty walking, you can buy a ticket for the elevator to the river. But then you have to take the elevator and are not allowed to use the stairs, even though the price for the elevator is many times higher.

Very cold water all year round. Very busy in summer. After rain in winter, the gorge is partially closed due to the risk of floods.

The canyons in this region, particularly the Alcantara Gorges, are renowned for their spectacular basalt colonnades. These unique formations were created by ancient volcanic eruptions where magma flowed into the riverbed and cooled rapidly upon contact with water, forming deep, irregular fractures. You can observe distinctive pentagonal and hexagonal prismatic shapes, including impressive vertical structures known as 'organ pipes' that can reach up to 30 meters high.
The Alcantara Gorge is a geological marvel, showcasing the dramatic interplay of volcanic activity and water erosion. Its scenic black basalt walls and the clear, cold waters of the Alcantara River create a stunning natural spectacle. It's also one of the few rivers in Sicily that flows year-round, fed by snowmelt from Mount Etna and the Nebrodi Mountains.
Yes, visitors can swim in the refreshing, albeit cold, waters of the Alcantara River within the gorges. There are small pebble beaches where you can relax and access the river. Many visitors enjoy wading into the water to explore the canyon further.
Besides relaxing on the pebble beaches and swimming, popular activities include river trekking, guided tours through the gorges, and sometimes rafting when river levels permit. The area offers a unique opportunity to explore the impressive basalt formations up close.
The Alcantara Gorges are beautiful year-round. However, for swimming and river activities, the summer months offer a refreshing escape from the heat, though it can get very crowded. Visiting in the morning is recommended to avoid the busiest times. After heavy rains in winter, parts of the gorge may be closed due to flood risk.
There are both private and municipal entrances to the Alcantara Gorges. The municipal entrance, known as Gole Alcantara — Municipal Entrance, offers a more budget-friendly option via a long flight of stairs down to the river. Private entrances often include elevators and guided tours. Visitors recommend taking swimwear and water shoes regardless of the entrance chosen.
Yes, the Alcantara Gorges can be family-friendly. The municipal entrance provides access to the river via stairs, allowing families to reach the pebble beaches for swimming and wading. However, the water is very cold, and some parts of the gorge may require wading through deeper sections, so supervision is essential. The Alcantara Gorges are a natural monument, offering an educational experience for all ages.
It's highly recommended to pack swimwear and water shoes if you plan to enter the river, as the water is cold and the riverbed can be rocky. Sunscreen, a towel, and a change of clothes are also advisable. For exploring the surrounding trails, comfortable walking shoes are essential.
