I have been there several times and have never seen the church open. But the place is still very beautiful, especially the panoramic path to the right of the church.

Isnello Village

Highlight • Settlement

Municipality in the province of Palermo and within the Madonie park, Isnello presents an area dotted with karst phenomena that create various caves and cavities. The origin of the name Isnello is uncertain: it could derive from the Syriac term hassin ("cold river"), from the Punic hassinor ("stream that flows in a tube-shaped bed") or from the Greek asines ("the harmlessness of the stream "). Several relatively important waterways, in fact, cross the Isnello territory. Furthermore, since 2016 there has been a Center for research, teaching and dissemination of astronomical sciences here, which was given the name GAL Hassin, a play on words between galaxy and the ancient name of the territory. In Isnello you can enjoy a really dark sky at night!

The dedication of this shrine, dedicated to the Madonna, refers to the town of Loreto. This is one of the major and most important Marian pilgrimage sites in Europe, along with Lourdes in the French Pyrenees and Fatima in Portugal. Unlike the other two, however, Loreto is not known for apparitions of the Virgin Mary. There, pilgrims can see something very tangible: the house where Mary grew up in Nazareth (Israel). Her parents—not mentioned by name in the biblical writings of the New Testament—are named in apocryphal traditions: Saint Anne and Saint Joachim are thus the grandparents of Jesus Christ (their feast day in the liturgical calendar is July 26). It is likely that Crusaders, as the era of the Christian kingdoms in the Holy Land came to an end towards the end of the 13th century, dismantled the venerated building in Nazareth and transported it to Europe. However, this very sober assumption is contrasted by a much more interesting legend: According to this legend, four angels carried out the translation and flew the house across the Mediterranean.

Castelbuono Castle, a symbol of this small town in the Palermo hinterland. And it couldn't be otherwise, given its grandeur and the glorious history that ties it to the very life of Castelbuono even today. The castle was commissioned by the Ventimiglia family, one of the richest and most noble families in Sicily, whose ties are not only to the castle, but to the very existence of the town of Castelbuono. There is little information about the origins of Castelbuono, but we know that in 1269, King Charles of Anjou confiscated the feudal state of Geraci from the Ventimiglia family, forcing the then head of the family, Alduino, to find new accommodation for the inhabitants of his village. The settlement was married to Ipsigro, an ancient Byzantine farmhouse, which once stood where the center of Castelbuono stands today. What a fantastic view from up here! (360°). A wooden sign marks the summit (Sicily's second highest!). The path is steep on all sides but always easy to walk, never really exposed; only loose rocks could pose a problem. The area was apparently quite busy in the past (ski lifts, etc.), but nature is slowly reclaiming the infrastructure...great beech "groves"!
