The organ, built in 1873, originated in the organ workshop of Adolf Reubke in Hausneindorf in the Harz Mountains. It has 40 stops distributed across three manuals and a pedal. The dispositional changes made over the years were reversed in 1995 during a general cleaning and partial restoration. The organ is the only surviving Reubke organ of its size and is also the largest Romanesque organ of the 19th century in the state of Brandenburg.

The oldest predecessor building was a small Romanesque church from the 12th century. It was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and merchants. Around the year 1400, this first church was rebuilt into a Gothic hall church with a tower and chancel. The Reformation was introduced in 1559. In 1622, the church and tower burned down. In the following decades, the former Franciscan church served as the parish church. Reconstruction of the Marienkirche only began in 1709, with the Gothic form serving as a model. The church could be consecrated in 1714. In 1820, there was a tower fire. In 1849 and 1850, a new two-towered facade with a blind gable was erected in the Neo-Gothic style. Three new bells were hung in the gable, which were moved into the interior of the towers in 1888. In 1904 and 1905, the interior was renovated and redesigned, emphasizing the Gothic spatial character. In the year 2000, the renovation of the church towers and roof began. The church building is a listed monument.

Behind the impressive classicist facade designed by Stüler is a late Gothic hall church. In addition to the altar, the large Romanesque baptismal font is well worth seeing and an absolute rarity. The origin of the huge, octagonal baptismal font with the expressive figures is unknown and is believed to have been created in the 13th century.
