The Matthäuskirche was built between 1876 and 1881 by the municipal council of Stuttgart, under the direction of city architect Adolf Wolff, as the central point and urban dominant feature of the southwestern city expansion (from 1889 Karlsvorstadt) on an island-like square in the axis of Möhringer Straße. The "Heslacher Dom" was executed in sandstone and received a roof covering of English slate. The inauguration took place on the 3rd Sunday of Advent in 1881.
