The 340-seat theater is located near Bernburg Castle. It is built in the Neoclassical style. Pillars stand on either side of the entrance, with a loggia above it. This loggia, inspired by antiquity, is designed as an anta temple. The front of the building is designed like a risalit. The building was commissioned by Duke Alexius Friedrich Christian of Anhalt-Bernburg in 1826/1827 and designed by the architect and building inspector Johann Philipp August Bunge. It opened as a ducal theater on March 2, 1827. In 1881/1882, it was remodeled by the Berlin architect and theater specialist Eduard Titz. At the same time, the theater was expanded into a municipal theater. In 1954, the municipal theater building was named after the composer Carl Maria von Weber. A comprehensive modernization and restoration took place from 1993 to 1997, including the construction of a new stage tower. The auditorium was restored to its original 19th-century design. A piece of Bernburg's history is coming to an end: After almost 60 years in service, the ferry "Einheit" will soon make its final journey. Bernburger Freizeit GmbH (BFG) and the city of Bernburg have decided to replace the old, diesel-powered ferry with a modern electric ferry. This marks the end of an era of nostalgia, but at the same time marks the beginning of a new chapter for ferry operations between the two banks of the Saale River. In 2026, the "Einheit" would have celebrated its 60th anniversary. The ferry has left countless memories for the people of Bernburg, not only as a means of transport but also as a symbol of the connection between the mountain town and the valley town. However, in recent years, the condition of the vessel has deteriorated, and recurring repairs have significantly increased operating costs. Bernburger Freizeit GmbH and the city of Bernburg have therefore decided to purchase a new ferry. The choice fell on a modern electric ferry, which is scheduled to take over operation of the "Einheit" starting in summer 2025. This decision was motivated by the limited reliability of the old ferry's service in recent years and the need to ensure a reliable means of transport in the long term.
