The Twelve Tower was built between 1468 and 1472 above the town's main entrance and served as the upper town gate, at a time when the nearby silver mine in Ridnaun brought prosperity to the region and Sterzing experienced its rise as a Fugger town. Two marble plaques above the archway still commemorate the laying of the foundation stone by Duke Sigismund of Austria in 1469. In 1867, the Gothic spire burned down and was subsequently replaced by the current stone stepped gable.

46-meter-high town or bell tower and landmark of Sterzing; built in 1468 in place of the Upper Gate at the transition between the old and new town.

Along the Rio Mareta, there is a stunning section in the Biotop Unteracker. If you're coming from Sterzing, the first half consists of well-compacted gravel, while the second half is paved with tar. For those who appreciate nature and the tranquility of the mountains, this route is definitely a must-do. Suitable for any bikes and doable also by families with children.

This is a free hiking car park with toilets to the Gilfenklamm, but certainly not a cycling highlight.
