A church in Münchberg is mentioned in documents since 1388. It is probable that a place of worship already existed in the 12th century. After several fires, the remains of previous buildings were demolished in 1864, and in 1867 the foundation stone of the current church was laid. The building, erected by Karl Kaufmann as a Neo-Gothic sandstone block building with a seventy-meter-high tower, is the seventh place of worship at this location. In 1931, the Neo-Gothic altar was purchased, a replica of a work by Veit Stoß.
