Enjoy magnificent views towards Canoe Mountain from this bench on the trails by Swift Creek. While you admire its north-facing aspect, consider that the mountain features the highest drivable road in the Canadian Rockies. ATV tours on the mountain are common.

This is as far up the valley as the trail alongside Swift Creek goes. Your reward is a lovely footbridge crossing and excellent views of the creek below.

Even a relatively short hike along Swift Creek opens up marvellous views towards Canoe Mountain to the south and the Premier Range. It's possible to complete a loop of just less than 10 kilometres (6 mi) taking in both sides of the creek.

Parking for the Mount Terry Fox Trail is located on Tinsley Pit Road, in a small dirt pullout. The higher the road goes, the rougher it gets, so gauge how far you drive up to the trailhead based on conditions and your vehicle's off-road capability.

Mount Terry Fox Trail begins in thick forest and climbs up 1,500 meters before breaking into alpine terrain. Tackle the Mount Terry Fox Trail between Mid-July and late September, and keep in mind it can be windy above treeline year-round.

Mount Terry Fox is a rugged, glaciated peak in the Rocky Mountains, rising above Highway 16. This peak was named in honor of Terry Fox in 1981, a tribute to his Marathon of Hope. The Mount Terry Fox Trail ends at an elevation of 2,200 meters, and to push on to the summit at 2,645 meters, you’ll follow cairns and have some 2-3 scrambling.

The terrain is challenging, characterized by high-grade metamorphic rocks, and generally lacks established recreational infrastructure, making it ideal for those seeking solitude and unconfined recreation.

Are there any easy hiking trails suitable for beginners in the Scrip Range?

Yes, there are a couple of easy trails. For a gentler experience, consider the Cranberry Marsh loop from Valemount, which is 5.8 km long and takes about 1 hour 28 minutes. Another easy option is the Hiking loop from Cranberry Lake, a 6.8 km path through forested areas, typically completed in about 1 hour 43 minutes.

Are there any circular hiking routes in the Scrip Range?

What is the best time of year to hike in the Scrip Range?

The best time to hike in the Scrip Range is typically during the warmer months when snow has melted at lower to mid-elevations, and alpine meadows are in bloom. Given the region's challenging and remote nature, summer and early autumn offer the most accessible conditions. Winter hiking would be extremely challenging and suitable only for highly experienced individuals with proper gear and avalanche awareness.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter while hiking in the Scrip Range?

The Monashee Mountains, including the Scrip Range, are home to diverse wildlife. You might spot species such as mountain caribou, grizzly bears, wolverines, mule deer, and pikas. It's important to be aware of your surroundings and practice wildlife safety, especially given the presence of sensitive species like mountain caribou and grizzly bears.

Are there any waterfalls or lakes to see along the hiking trails?

The broader Monashee Mountains are known for numerous pristine, glacier-fed lakes and waterfalls, especially in heather-covered alpine areas. While specific trails in the Scrip Range may not explicitly list waterfalls, the region's glaciated terrain and U-shaped valleys suggest that you are likely to encounter beautiful water features, particularly at higher elevations.

What should I wear or bring for hiking in the Scrip Range?

Given the rugged and undeveloped nature of the Scrip Range, it's crucial to be well-prepared. You should wear sturdy hiking boots, dress in layers suitable for varying weather conditions, and carry essentials like navigation tools, sufficient water, food, first-aid supplies, and bear spray. Be prepared for route-finding in a wilderness setting rather than following marked paths.

Are the trails in the Scrip Range suitable for families with children?
