The Church of San Michele Arcangelo is a Catholic place of worship with Romanesque and Baroque forms, located on Strada Mattaleto in Mattaleto, a fraction of Langhirano, in the province and diocese of Parma; it is the seat of a parish included in the pastoral area of the Pedemontana. HISTORY: The original place of worship was perhaps built as early as the Lombard period; however, the oldest evidence of its existence dates back only to 1230, when the Ecclesie Sancti Michaelis de Mataleto was mentioned in the Capitulum seu Rotulus Decimarum of the diocese of Parma among the dependencies of the abbey of San Giovanni Evangelista of Parma, despite being located within the territory administered by the parish of Castrignano. In 1496 the temple was already the seat of a parish, with jurisdiction also over nearby Langhirano; in 1560 the church passed under the direct authority of the episcopal authority of Parma. In 1715, due to the precarious conditions witnessed in 1713 by the report of the pastoral visit of the bishop of Parma Camillo Marazzani, the Romanesque building was almost completely demolished, preserving only the ancient bell tower intact. On the rubble was built, designed by the architect Francesco Boetti, a new Baroque church with an orientation opposite to the previous one, which was completed in 1723. Around 1780 the neoclassical entrance portal was added. Between 1813 and 1819 some works were carried out, which concerned the presbytery, where the marble high altar was replaced, and the upper part of the bell tower, which was raised with the addition of the belfry and the crowning spire. Between 1883 and 1886 the place of worship was completely renovated, both in the facade and in the interiors, where the decorations were made and the floor was redone. Until 1944 the church was the parish seat of a vast territory also including Langhirano, which on October 1 of that year, at the end of the expansion works of the church of the Annunciation of Mary Virgin located in the capital, broke away creating a new autonomous parish. Around 1960 the main facade was restored again. On December 23, 2008, an earthquake caused serious damage to the building, which was consequently closed to worship; in 2009 the necessary structural consolidation and restoration works were started, completed at the end of 2011. Originally built in Romanesque style in the 12th century, the chapel was demolished and rebuilt in 1453 at the behest of Pier Maria II de' Rossi, during the construction of the adjacent castle; erected as a parish seat in 1564, the church was raised towards the end of the 17th century; profoundly transformed in Baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century, reversing the orientation of the structure and plastering the interior, it was modified again in 1755 by raising the eighteenth-century apse; renovated between 1829 and 1831 with the reconstruction of the façade, it was restored in 1941 and structurally strengthened between 1973 and 1975; damaged by the 2008 earthquake, it was consolidated between 2011 and 2013; The place of worship retains some portions of the original building and the Rossi-designed one, visible in the stone wall facing, as well as some 18th-century paintings. Also known as the Oratory of the Assumption or the Oratory of the Assumption of the Madonna. Very pretty, located in a charming and panoramic spot. Ideal for a break in the adjacent meadow.
