The Sanctuary, the last of the Mysteries, concludes the sacred journey and stands out over the lake, in a marvelous panoramic position. When construction of the Sacred Mount began, the Sanctuary already existed: it was built in 1537 to venerate a 15th-century marble statue of the Virgin, believed to be miraculous. The austere exterior contrasts with the decorative vivacity of stuccoes and frescoes that adorn the single barrel-vaulted nave.

The chapels of the Sacro Monte contain scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary, depicted with frescoes and life-size statues, creating a highly dramatic and emotionally charged effect. They were created between 1635 and 1714 by various artists from Como and Ticino. The first chapel is dedicated to the Annunciation: from here begins the ascent of the Via Crucis, which, along a cobbled path, leads to the Sanctuary. Harmoniously integrated into the landscape, are the fourteen chapels: equidistant from each other to allow for the recitation of a dozen Hail Marys and meditation on the meaning of the various episodes. The nine Sacri Monti of the Alpine region were declared a World Heritage Site in 2003 for their artistic, scenic, and spiritual value.
