The Romäus Tower (historically actually Diebesturm) is a massive defensive tower in the northwest of the historical city fortifications of Villingen. It has a wall thickness of up to 3.5 meters and is famous as the prison of the legendary Villingen local hero and giant "Romäus". The Age: The fortified tower was built in the 13th century (around 1240) as a corner tower of the city's defensive system. Dimensions: It has a square base, is a proud 34 meters high (almost 40 meters with the roof) and is one of the most massive defensive towers in all of Southern Germany. The lower floors are made of mighty bossed ashlar. Function: For centuries, the tower served as the city prison and torture chamber for serious offenders. For security reasons, the only access was originally at a height of 12 meters and was only reachable via a ladder or the rampart walk.

The Romäusturm is part of the Villingen town wall and was originally a prison tower in which Romäus was imprisoned. He is also depicted in the picture on the tower. A small anecdote about him says that he was allegedly the Robin Hood of Villingen. He is also depicted as such during the Villingen carnival. He is said to have stolen a city gate from Rottweil at the time and then gifted it to the people of Villingen.

The old town of Villingen is still very well preserved within the city walls and worth seeing! Particularly noteworthy are the Franziskaner and the Münster, around which the weekly market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
