The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Fonte is a grandiose monumental complex, located at the end of the long tree-lined avenue that begins with the arch of Porta Nuova, close to the historic center of the city. Its origin dates back to the famous episode of the Apparition: on May 26, 1432, the peasant woman Giannetta de Vacchi was in the Mazzolengo meadow, near the village of Caravaggio, when she witnessed the apparition of a woman whom she immediately recognized as the Virgin Mary due to her majesty and beauty. As a testament to the event, a new spring gushed forth in the field, whose waters were capable of healing ailments. In the immediately following centuries, a place of worship was built to remain in eternal memory of the event: this building later became the current Basilica of the Sanctuary of Caravaggio.

Attention: the track is very narrow at times, in some places very close to the collapsed banks

I would avoid long stops in the area. Unfortunately it is an area that is easy to access even by means other than bicycles and pedestrians. Unfortunately, drug dealers or unsavory people often circulate in the nearby groves

Pay attention to the embankments: many have collapsed and have been reported. Others don't. Caution

Maximum caution and follow the deviation to the right on the path

Be careful on this stretch because the Serio river has devoured at least 50 meters of embankment/bank, but luckily the Protection workers were already at work to report the dangerous stretch and create a new path that goes around the collapsed bank.

At this point an invasion of creepers (perhaps Kudzu "pueraria lobara") covers the locust trees creating a very suggestive scenario... domes and peaks of plants similar to giant ivy reminiscent of prehistoric or tropical landscapes. Visible on the edge of a beautiful cycle path with gravel.
