The Church of Our Lady in the Bengesen district was built in 1888/90 during the historicist period. Cathedral architect Wirz from Trier built a three-aisled basilica without a transept, with a single-tower west façade, a recessed choir, a sacristy and an altar boy's chamber, using exclusively Gothic architectural forms. In 1953/54, the church underwent extensive, fundamental changes through a conversion and extension under the direction of the Cologne church architects Dominikus and Gottfried Böhm. The choir and its adjoining rooms were demolished and a rectangular building with a straight east apse in neo-Gothic style was added at right angles to the resulting nave, which is illuminated by 44 round windows. The church thus lost the character of a longitudinal building and took on the shape of a St. Anthony's cross. The special and original feature is the imposing, canopy-like superstructure in the middle of the extension. It extends over the old nave and the altar island was built at the intersection point, thereby emphasizing the central importance of the altar in church architecture.
