Tips from the Community

April 22, 2026, Roter Main

The Rote Main is the longer of the two headwaters of the Main river and significantly shapes the cityscape of Bayreuth. The river owes its name to the clay-rich soils of its catchment area. Especially after rainfall, reddish clay particles are washed into the water, giving it a characteristic reddish-brown color. It originates in the Lindenhardter Forst in the Franconian Switzerland, about 10 kilometers south of Bayreuth. At around 72 to 73 kilometers, it is significantly longer than the Weiße Main. Near Kulmbach (Schloss Steinenhausen), it merges with the Weiße Main to form the actual Main.

The cycle path from Hollfeld to Sachsendorf is a short but scenic route, often used as a connecting or shortcut for longer tours in the northern Franconian Switzerland region. The one-way trip is approximately 4.9 kilometers and takes about 30 minutes by bicycle. The route is considered easy, but includes a total ascent of approximately 102 meters, as it tends to climb uphill from Hollfeld (lowest point 377 m, highest point 452 m). Along the way, you'll pass the Five Wounds Cross, a historic wayside shrine, and a small wayside chapel. The path leads northeast from Hollfeld, parallel to the St 2189 road, and offers direct access to the region's breweries. The destination, Sachsendorf, is particularly well-known for the Stadter Brewery Inn, a popular stop for cyclists on the Brewery Trail.

This is our recommendation for a stop. Delicious food and super friendly service. In summer, there's lovely seating in the beer garden.

The Bayreuth–Hollfeld railway line was a branch line. It branched off the Schnabelwaid–Bayreuth railway line at the Kreuzstein junction in Bayreuth and led to Hollfeld in northern Franconian Switzerland.
