Thaya River Border Crossing Bridge (Thayatal National Park)

Highlight • Bridge

Don't forget your passport when hiking to the Czech Republic! A place steeped in history that brings back memories of terrible personal fates! We met a man whose family was separated by the border for many years; they only saw each other on occasional visits. Bunkers, customs houses and the remains of the Iron Curtain in Čížov are reminders of a bad past. How nice it is that people from both countries can meet again while hiking in the large shared national park.

Thayabrücke Inn

Highlight • Restaurant

The inn was a real highlight for me. I can really recommend stopping here at the end of the tour and having something to eat and/or drink. The food was excellent and the service friendly. Open daily from April to October. Mon.–Thurs. 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sun. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kitchen opens at 11:30 a.m. When I'm hiking nearby again, I'm looking forward to stopping here again! The business doesn't rely on the fact that there isn't much to go to in the area anyway - no, even the "day trippers" who may never come back here get excellent quality!

Hardegg is a castle in the district of Hollabrunn in Lower Austria. It rises high above the valley of the river Dyje and dominates the town of the same name, which grew up in its subcastle. The name of the castle is derived from the Old High German word hard = forest, -egg = rock, stone, in the figurative sense then "strong house in the forest".
