It is incredible that in this type of terrain, no matter how enthusiastic and helpful all the locals were (this is even more incredible: kudos to the people there), someone broke through an impressive 57km long trail and in just, mind you: 3 years!!! From 1930 to 1933. It was built by Ante Premužić and created a masterpiece of architecture, protected as a cultural asset of national importance. If anyone is interested in the details about the trail (they are truly impressive): https://np-sjeverni-velebit.hr/www/hr/park/premuziceva-staza It is incredible that the view of Velebit from the sea does not offer even a hundredth part of that magnificent mountain. There are gentle, green pastures, forest-covered parts, vertical stone cliffs... Something for everyone. This trail has everything for everyone, and the most fascinating fact is that it is easy to overcome because it goes along the top part, especially in the direction from Zavižan. We left our car in Krasno in front of the Velebit House. Why did we stop at the Velebit House and not drive all the way to the parking lot below Zavižan? Namely, that section is too long for one day because we would have to cover 30km, which is really too much. That's where Mr. Dragec stepped in, who has been organizing rides for hikers for years who want to cross various sections of Velebit and want to go through and see as much as possible (like us) but don't want to sleep halfway but return the same day. Mr. Dragec picked us up at the Velebit House in Krasno and took us to the parking lot on Zavižan, from where we headed towards PD Alan where he was waiting for us and from PD Alan he took us to Krasno to the car. Elegant, comfortable and we also saw additional landscapes along the way. Dragec transport: https://www.dragec-prijevoz.hr/ and here: https://www.facebook.com/dragecccc

At 1,594 meters above sea level, below the Vučjak peak, is the Zavižan Mountain Lodge and the oldest high-altitude meteorological station in Croatia, founded in 1953.

It is better to hike anti-clockwise! There are some places where you have to climb. Good footwear and mountain experience are required.

The Premužić Trail is a hiking trail that passes through the peaks of the northern and middle Velebit. The trail is 57 km long, and the first 16 km (8-9 hours of walking) pass through the Northern Velebit National Park. The usual direction of movement is from the north, from the Zavižan mountain hut (1594 m), over the Veliki Alan pass (1412 m) to Oštarijski vrata (927 m). In Željko Poljak's book "50 most beautiful hiking trips in Croatia", only the Premužić trail received the highest rating.

View from the mountain top. You might not be allowed to ride or push the bike there, but the view is still worth at least walking there.

Velika kosa, at 5,314 feet (1,620 m), is a peak in the Northern Velebit, just to the north of the Velebit Botanical Garden. It's a short ascent from the Zavižan mountain hut to reach the summit. Your reward is magnificent views across the Velebit massif and out to the islands of the Adriatic Sea.

Occupying a beautiful meadow below the summit slopes of Vučjak, the Zavižan hut makes for a great pit stop when exploring the peaks of the Northern Velebit. It acts as a weather station and is the highest continuously inhabited building in Croatia. The hut enjoys splendid views towards the Adriatic and of the Zavižan basin.

The most renowned hiking route is the Premužić Trail, recognized as a cultural heritage site. This 57 km masterpiece of dry-stone construction offers relatively easy access to scenic parts of the park without steep ascents. The section within the National Park spans about 16 km and takes 8-9 hours to hike. For more challenging options, you can explore routes around Zavižan Hut, such as the difficult trails leading to Velika Kosa Peak or Balinovac Peak. For those seeking a challenge, Balinovac Peak provides stunning views, though it requires surefootedness and some climbing skill.

The House of Velebit in Krasno serves as an educational visitor center detailing the mountain's history, ecology, and cultural heritage. Throughout the park, particularly in areas like Veliki Lubenovac, you can find remnants of shepherd's 'summer huts' and extensive dry stone walls, which testify to the traditional way of life in the Velebit mountains.
