Sergeant Kellner was shot down at this point by enemy fighter planes on December 23, 1944.

Impressive monument in memory of the fatal plane crash of the German fighter pilot Sergeant Kellner one day before Christmas Eve 1943 near Steimel, where he was shot down by Allied fighter planes. Debris from the BF-109 is placed at the base of the monument. Sergeant Kellner was part of a reconnaissance squadron stationed at Cologne-Wahn Airport. According to my research, Sergeant Kellner must have encountered an Allied bomber group near Bad Neuenahr during a reconnaissance flight towards Aachen, which bombed the city. He was probably pursued by enemy fighters all the way to Steimel, where he was shot down.
