June 14, 2026, Moritzburg Church

The Moritzburg Church is the church building of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in the Saxon town of Moritzburg and is a listed building. The 47 m high house of worship was built between 1902 and 1904 according to the design of the Dresden architect Richard Schleinitz (1861–1916) for the then parish of Eisenberg-Moritzburg. The foundation stone was laid on September 26, 1902, and the church consecration took place on November 7, 1904. The construction costs of the church amounted to 163,635 marks. A remarkable feature of the church is that the choir faces west and is not, as is usual, oriented to the east. The church is designed in the style of a central building in Neo-Baroque forms, thus corresponding stylistically with the Baroque Moritzburg Castle. Special features in the interior are the much older altarpiece "Transfiguration of Christ" by Stefano Cattaneo (painted in 1669 for Elector John George II of Saxony), the four Evangelist stucco ornaments in the double dome, and the organ built in 1904 by the Dresden organ building company Gebrüder Jehmlich with a late Romantic sound. It has 25 registers on two manuals and pedal. During the turmoil of World War II, the church was almost destroyed twice by fire. In April 1945 by the SS "due to its exposed location" and on May 7, 1945 by the advancing Soviet troops "because wreaths in honor of the fallen with swastika ribbons hung on the galleries". In both cases, the worst was prevented by the then pastor Otto Seibt (pastor from 1944 to 1957) and others. After no maintenance measures could be carried out for many years, a comprehensive renovation and restoration of the Moritzburg Church finally began in 1992. The work was divided into individual steps for financial reasons, which were completed over a period of almost two decades until the completion could be celebrated in the summer of 2010. Through grants, subsidies (from the federal government, the state of Saxony, and the municipality) and private donations, the sum of over 2.4 million euros was raised for the renovation. The church is a venue for the Moritzburg Chamber Music Festival, which takes place annually in August. With effect from January 2, 2021, the parishes of the Friedenskirche in Radebeul, the Lutherkirche in Radebeul, the Reichenberg Church, and the Moritzburg Church merged into a parish, which has borne the name Evangelical Lutheran Parish in the Lößnitz since July 1, 2021. Church of Peace in Radebeul in Altkötzschenbroda in Saxon Radebeul-West. Formerly Church of Kötzschenbroda. After the destruction of the predecessor building in 1429, a late Gothic new building began in 1477 and was consecrated in 1510. Its present appearance was given by a partial reconstruction in the Neo-Gothic style of 1884/1885.
