Fort Thüngen, named after the Austrian fortress commander Adam Sigmund Freiherr von Thüngen, was built in 1732. It was laid out around the "Redoute du Parc", built around 1688 by Vauban. The fort was surrounded by a deep moat and could be reached from Fort Obergrünewald through a 169 m long underground gallery. The Kirchberg district, located on a plateau northeast of the city, is the modern hub of Luxembourg, housing European institutions (Court of Justice, European Parliament, Commission), major international banks, and company headquarters. Recognizable by its bold contemporary architecture, notably the Philharmonie and its iconic white columns, it strongly contrasts with the historic old town and illustrates Luxembourg's role as a European financial and political center.
