This segment used to be very treacherous, and then was closed for at least a few years. I haven't hiked it for probably 12 years, but now there are rope railings on the sides making it much nicer, great to have something to grab. In the fall it'll make your heart race when you can see all the way down to the river because there is no leaf cover going down the bluff. In the summer like I hiked today it wasn't nearly as "fear of heights inducing". Still an exhilarating part of the hike for sure!

One of the interesting features of the Barn Bluff area is the staircases that Kiwannis built. This one has donors names on each step, some with a K in a circle indicating they are Kiwannis members I'm guessing.

There is a much bigger parking area now then when I was here years ago. They are also starting a new trail going to the east from here, not sure where it will get to. Even with all this parking today people were parked up and down the street.

Not sure what was stored in this cave, but it was definitely man made and has some cool stone work. Lots of cold breezes flowing out of it.

Great views, first time hiking here in the summer, a lot of leaf cover which kept it feeling cool, but also cut down on being able to see a long ways at all points of the hike. Now there were specific areas you could see out from.

The kiln was used for the transformation of He Mni Can-Barn Bluff’s raw limestone into commercial lime, quick lime or unslaked lime for use in mortar and plaster. Wood was used to fire the kiln. The lime burning process started with the raw material, a calcite limestone (calcium carbonate) which was placed in the kiln to be “burnt” or roasted at a temperature of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours. The carbon dioxide was driven off in the burning process, leaving lime (calcium oxide). One ton or 2,000 pounds of limestone made 1,000 pounds of quicklime.
