The Goethe column was created by sculptor Erwin Otte from Reuth, who also created the Nepomuk fountain on Johannisplatz. The 4.80 meter high work of art, which was erected in 2003 and is made of Waldsassen antique glass, has a basic shape of a triangle. One edge leads into a granite semicircle and also points towards the basilica and monastery. The semicircle is continued in a visionary way with cobblestones and symbolizes travel. As a stopover on his trip to Italy, Waldsassen finds the following reflection in Goethe's travel report: "In Bavaria, you immediately come across the Waldsassen monastery... precious possessions of the clergymen who were wiser than other people." The towering work of art was created with vertical views on all three sides. The incorporated Waldsassen antique glass from Lamberts in the colors yellow and blue represents intellect on the one hand and calm on the other.

Since her election as abbess in 1995, Mother Laetitia Fech has transformed the decaying monastery into a modern business enterprise. It creates jobs not only in the city, but also in the wider area, although only six sisters still live in the abbey. The most honorable guesthouse is probably the St. Joseph's guesthouse, which offers warm hospitality and three-star comfort behind medieval walls. A sad ruin for many years, it was reopened in 2008 with a sensitive mix of historical substance and modern elements. The fact that you immediately feel so comfortable and at home in the simple, elegant rooms named after saints is certainly due to the Benedictine rule "Porta patet, cor magis" - "The monastery gate is open, our hearts even more so." As the monastery's economist, Sister Sophia runs the guesthouse with its cozy vaulted restaurant and the adjoining monastery shop.

The modern fountain was built in 2003. Erwin Otte designed the granite work of art. Nepomuk, made of bronze, holds a cross in his left hand, which is based on the spires of the basilica. A semicircular light band with six underwater spotlights runs through the arch carved out of the bridge at the bottom of the pool. These symbolize the six stars that, according to legend, indicated where the body of John Nepomuk was in the Vltava. The bridge represents connections. The stones in and around the fountain invite you to sit down. They make the fountain come alive.
