Even though the summit of Espuña is a military restricted area and you can't plan the climb in Komoot, you can (and should) drive almost all the way up to the summit - it's worth it. In winter it can get very cold - it's the north side without any sun!

Decent asphalt, hardly any traffic, great landscape. I would strongly recommend the C25, the road south to the RM-515 (Cuestas del Marqués) is in very poor condition. In the south of the section we head west uphill to the Sierra Espuña :)

While the San Luis Valley, where Blanca is located, offers extensive cycling opportunities, komoot currently features a limited number of dedicated no-traffic road cycling routes directly around Blanca. However, the region is known for its quiet county roads and sections of the Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway, which can provide low-traffic cycling experiences through the expansive valley.
The best time for road cycling in Blanca is typically from late spring through early fall (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally mild, and roads are clear of snow. Cyclists should be aware of the high altitude (Blanca is at 7,756 feet) and prepare for potential afternoon thunderstorms during the summer monsoon season.
Given the expansive nature of the San Luis Valley and the presence of quiet county roads, it is possible to find sections suitable for family-friendly cycling. While specific designated car-free family routes are not highlighted, exploring the less-trafficked parts of the Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway or local county roads away from major highways can offer a pleasant experience for families. Always prioritize safety and check current road conditions.
The San Luis Valley offers a mix of terrain. While the valley floor itself is relatively flat, providing gentle rides with panoramic views, the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains offer opportunities for more challenging routes with significant elevation gains. Expect paved sections on state highways and county roads, with some variation in shoulder width. The high altitude will add to the physical exertion regardless of the gradient.
Cycling around Blanca offers stunning views of natural and historical landmarks. You'll frequently see the majestic Blanca Peak dominating the skyline. The Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway passes by historic sites like Fort Garland and offers distant views of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The expansive San Luis Valley itself provides vast, open vistas.
While komoot's current selection of routes is limited, the nature of the road network in the San Luis Valley, particularly the interconnected county roads and sections of the Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway, allows for the creation of custom circular routes. You can plan loops that utilize quieter roads to minimize traffic exposure, offering diverse scenery and viewpoints.
Parking is generally available in the town of Blanca itself, often near local businesses or public spaces. For routes starting outside the town, look for designated parking areas at trailheads, state wildlife areas like Smith Reservoir, or along less-trafficked county roads where safe and permissible. Always ensure you are not blocking private access or creating a hazard.
The komoot community rates the cycling experiences around Blanca highly, with an average score of 5.0 stars based on 11 ratings. Reviewers often praise the expansive views of the San Luis Valley, the quietness of many roads, and the dramatic backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, making for a unique high-desert cycling adventure.
For beginners seeking easy, no-traffic road cycling, focus on the flatter sections of county roads within the San Luis Valley, away from major highways. These roads offer minimal elevation gain and generally lower traffic volumes, providing a good introduction to cycling in the high-desert landscape. Always check local road conditions and traffic patterns before heading out.
Yes, cycling can bring you close to several natural attractions. Smith Reservoir, a State Wildlife Area popular for fishing and camping, is just two miles south of Blanca and offers great views of Mount Blanca. Further afield, the Blanca Wetlands, a vital refuge for migratory birds, can be accessed via roads northeast of Alamosa, offering a unique ecological experience.
Public transport options directly to and from Blanca are limited. Most cyclists traveling to the area will rely on personal vehicles to transport their bikes. Once in the region, cycling is the primary mode of transport for exploring the routes. Planning your starting and ending points with vehicle access in mind is advisable.
While Blanca itself has limited services, you'll find basic amenities in the town. For longer no-traffic routes through the San Luis Valley, services like cafes or stores can be sparse. It's highly recommended to carry sufficient water, snacks, and any necessary supplies for your entire ride, especially when venturing onto quieter county roads. Plan your route to pass through small towns if you anticipate needing to refuel.
