Approximately 1.5 km from the sub-camp, north of the Libiąż Chełmek railway line, there were three interconnected ponds. The first, located closest to "Bata," was a work site for prisoners. The pond was drained, and prisoners removed silt and reeds from its bottom and cleared away tree roots.

A sub-camp was established in October 1942 in Chełmek (German: Chelmek). Approximately 150 prisoners were housed in a barracks belonging to the narrow-gauge railway locomotive shed. These were mostly Jews from transports that arrived in early autumn from France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. On the orders of Joachim Schulz-Bundte, the commissioner of the local Bata plant, they were to clean ponds used to draw water for the factory. Starvation, hard labor, and brutal treatment by the SS resulted in 47 deaths in the sub-camp over the course of two months, while 64 were taken to the camp hospital in serious condition. In December, the last 34 prisoners were transferred to Auschwitz I, where their admission was recorded in the hospital book. At least 28 died within a month, meaning that almost all the prisoners in this sub-camp perished.

A rather demanding, steep climb to Skała Hill in Chełmek. Good-quality asphalt surface. Access to the cemetery and the observation tower named after Captain Witold Pilecki. There is also a monument there, "In Commemoration of Those Who Resurrected a Free Homeland Through Fight and Labor (1918, 1980, 1989)."

Still under construction but the views from there are beautiful 🤓😬

Beautiful views and a good surface for a road bike. The only thing that can be annoying are "walkers" alone or with dogs who ignore the signs that this is a bike path.
