The Excideuil hospital building, designed in reinforced concrete, is a hospital complex built from 1937, with an interruption during the war, then resumed in 1949. It comprises several buildings including a main hospital in the shape of a comb with a curved plan, with seven levels adapted to the slope of the land, allowing differentiated entrances. The architecture strictly separates the services by floor (medicine, surgery, children, etc.) with rooms open on the south facade to let in light. The building also has a central glass rotunda housing the reception hall and operating rooms, as well as an administrative building with a clock tower. The complex is located in a large sloping park overlooking the town of Excideuil

The region offers a diverse landscape ideal for gravel biking, characterized by quiet country lanes, greenways, and routes through deep river valleys and undulating countryside. You'll encounter steep green wooded hills, patchwork fields, extensive forests, meadows, and rivers. Many routes feature 'Chemins blancs' (white roads), providing a classic gravel experience.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end in the same location. For example, the Roches Enchantées – Abbaye Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens loop from Excideuil offers a challenging ride, while the La Loue / Coulaures loop from Mayac provides a moderate option.
The trails often pass by or near significant points of interest. You can explore the area around Château de Hautefort and Gardens, a stunning example of classical architecture. The Roches Enchantées – Abbaye Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens loop from Excideuil will take you past the historic Romanesque Abbey of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens. The La Loue / Coulaures area is also a scenic highlight.
While the listed routes are generally moderate to difficult, the region's network of quiet country lanes and greenways makes it possible to find sections suitable for families. Look for routes with less elevation gain and shorter distances, such as the La Loue / Coulaures loop from Mayac, which is a moderate 21.8 km ride.
Many of the natural trails and quiet country roads are suitable for cycling with dogs, provided they are well-behaved and kept under control, ideally on a leash for their safety and that of wildlife. Always check local regulations for specific areas, especially within nature reserves or private lands.
The Périgord Vert region is beautiful throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, with fewer crowds. Summer can be warm, so early morning or late afternoon rides are recommended. Winter can be damp, but many trails remain rideable.
Parking is generally available in the villages where the routes start. For instance, you can typically find parking in Excideuil for the Roches Enchantées – Abbaye Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens loop, or in Mayac for the La Loue / Coulaures loop. Look for public parking areas near village centers or trailheads.
The routes often pass through or near small villages like Excideuil, Savignac-les-Églises, Mayac, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés. These villages typically offer local cafes, bakeries, or small restaurants where you can refuel. It's always a good idea to check opening hours in advance, especially outside of peak season.
The region is known for its 'bucolic natural environment' with extensive forests, meadows, and the scenic Auvézère River, which has carved out impressive features like the Gorges de l'Auvézère. The underlying karst terrain also means you might encounter interesting geological formations, though the famous Grotte de Tourtoirac is best visited separately.
The trails vary in difficulty. For example, the Roches Enchantées – Abbaye Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens loop from Excideuil is rated as difficult, featuring significant elevation changes over 33.5 km. Other routes, like the Savignac les églises – La Loue / Coulaures loop from Savignac-les-Églises, are moderate, offering a good balance of distance and elevation for experienced gravel riders.
While the guide focuses on 'no traffic' routes which include quiet country lanes and 'Chemins blancs', the region does have established infrastructure for off-road cycling, including 'Bases Rando Gravel' and 'VTT Bases'. These often incorporate sections of greenways or dedicated paths that are excellent for gravel bikes, providing smooth, traffic-free riding.
