The legend of Charles's tower in Konin Żagański In 1596, for the celebration of Pentecost, the newly built tower - the bell tower, founded by Charles Magnus Schellendorf, was opened. Many famous and important guests came to such a great event. The tower's appearance symbolized God's strength, and its size only emphasized it. As the tallest in the town, it was supposed to be a testimony to the glory of God and no other monument could compare with it. At the beginning of the 18th century, in 1716, Arnold Bucholz, an entrepreneur from Żary, decided to lease the existing farm in Konin and rebuild it into a distillery and brewery. During the reconstruction, it turned out that the chimney in the farm did not have adequate air flow. Buchholz decided to add an extension to it. In this way, the chimney became higher than the church tower. Soon he also created a breeding pond near the farm. In pagan times, there was a spring here that was considered a holy place. However, human pride was curbed. One gloomy November day, a storm with lightning passed over Konin, striking the farm buildings again and again, starting a fire. The damage included, among others, the distillery's chimney. Legend has it that since that event, the owner of the farm became completely lost in his life and lost all his property because the distillery's products tasted terrible.
