Built in the early 14th century, the castle was the residence of the Dukes of Mazovia, rebuilt by Casimir the Great, and at the end of the 15th century became part of the royal estate. It was later destroyed as a result of wars and partitions. The only towers left from the seat of the rulers of Mazovia are the Zegarowa and Szlachecka towers and a fragment of the defensive walls, which was the wall of the former abbey.
